CIFTIS Orange Industry and Sustainable Investment Forum
2024年9月13日
Remarks by Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China (pre-recorded).
Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am pleased to address you at the Orange Economy and Sustainable Investment Forum at the 2024 China International Fair for Trade in Services. I wish to thank the United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s Investment and Technology Promotion Offices in Beijing for bringing us together to discuss this vital topic at a crucial moment for global economic growth and sustainability.
The global creative economy, or what we refer to as the Orange Economy, is evolving rapidly, but faces challenges. The rise of digital technology and artificial intelligence brings opportunities, yet these opportunities may only be available for some people and countries due to the persistent digital divide. Over one-third of the global population remains with access to the internet, and many creative industries in developing nations struggle to utilize the potential of new and emerging technologies. This gap not only hinders growth, but also risks exacerbating already existing inequalities.
At the same time, many small and medium-sized enterprises in the creative sector face obstacles in accessing global markets and financing. Therefore, this forum provides an opportunity for us to reflect on these challenges and find ways to promote sustainable investment and growth in the Orange Economy.
The United Nations recognizes the transformative potential of the Orange Economy in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and UN agencies are leading efforts to promote its growth globally. For example, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization supports cultural and creative industries through initiatives that preserve and promote cultural heritage, which is essential to the Orange Economy; while UN Trade and Development conducts research and provides policy advice to support countries in leveraging the potential of the creative economy for sustainable development, especially through the Culture 2030 Indicators. Other UN agencies are also supporting the expansion of the Orange Economy, such as the United Nations Development Programme, which works with creative industries to drive inclusive economic growth, fostering innovation and cultural diversity.
UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Offices is uniquely placed to leverage industry, technology, and investment power to collaborate with private partners to create innovative and practical outcomes. Today, we gather here in China, a global leader in the Orange Economy and the world’s largest exporter of creative goods. China's creative industries have thrived, especially in cities like Beijing, where technology, culture, and government policy intersect.
The rapid development of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in China has further enabled the Orange Economy to prosper, contributing to economic growth, cultural diversity, and social inclusion. The UN system in China looks forward to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure all countries can take full advantage of the opportunities offered by the Orange Economy to advance sustainable development. We stand ready to establish, connect, and facilitate partnerships that promote inclusive growth in the creative industries.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Today's forum offers a platform to deepen our understanding of the Orange Economy and its potential to address the challenges we face. I encourage you all to use your time at the forum to explore new partnerships and to commit to actions for sustainable growth. Together, we can build a future where creativity drives inclusive development, fosters innovation, and strengthens international cooperation. Let us use this forum to generate new ideas and solutions to propel the Orange Economy forward and ensure its benefits reach everyone, leaving no one behind. I firmly believe that by working together and leveraging the potential of the Orange Economy, we can make significant progress towards achieving the SDGs and creating a more prosperous and inclusive world.
