It is a great honour to join you today for the opening of the Environmental, Social, and Governance – Sustainable Innovation Exhibition. This year holds special significance, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, which were first introduced by the United Nations Global Compact in 2004.
In 2004, at the inaugural United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit, then-Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, articulated a vision that would shape the future of global business: a vision of sustainability, responsibility, and collective action. It was during this summit that the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact were refined, and ESG terminology was formally introduced.
These principles—rooted in respect for human rights, labour standards, environmental stewardship, and anti-corruption—were designed to guide businesses worldwide in their journey towards sustainable development. ESG is not just a framework; it is a universal value that has become indispensable in navigating the complex challenges of globalization.
Over the past two decades, ESG has evolved from a set of guiding principles into a global movement, deeply embedded within corporate strategies and operations. It is now recognized as the cornerstone for fostering resilient, ethical, and sustainable leadership—values that resonate strongly with the "new quality productive capacity" that China advocates. Today, ESG serves as a beacon, guiding businesses to not only thrive, but to do so responsibly, in harmony with our planet and society.
We are excited for the United Nations Global Compact to participate in this exhibition for the first time in China. Through this platform, we will be able to showcase the progress, innovations, and best practices that have emerged from two decades of commitment to ESG principles. We hope this participation will inspire new collaborations and solutions, driving us closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
I wish the event great success and look forward to the continued partnership between the United Nations Global Compact and all of you in building a better world.
