UN Policy Dialogue Series, 11 December 2020
The United Nations (UN) in China in collaboration with the Government of China organised a policy dialogue titled “China’s experience in strengthening food systems amid the response to COVID-19”. This was the second of a series of events planned under the United Nations Framework for the Immediate Socio-Economic Response to COVID-19 and under the leadership of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China. UN-ESCAP’s Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM) led the coordination of the event bringing together eight UN entities.
We invited partners from central and local government, academia, private sector, and think tanks for a reflection on how to address the fragility of food systems that has been highlighted across the world by the pandemic. The aim is to share and learn from the efforts in China and globally to strengthen food systems and ensure food security amid the pandemic.
The hybrid virtual/in person format dialogue included three rounds of discussions cantered around restoring robust and resilient food systems, ensuring food security and nutrition services for the most vulnerable and protecting ecosystems and food systems. These are meant to be the stepping stone for the work of the United Nations in China towards the global Food Systems Summit in 2021.
