UN-Habitat China Future Cities Council Convened Expert Group Meeting on AI and Cities in Shanghai

Shanghai, China 17-18 April 2025 — UN-Habitat China Future Cities Council (CFCC) has successfully concluded its First Expert Group Meeting (EGM) for the flagship report "Future Cities Advisory Outlook 2025: AI and Cities" in Shanghai, China.
The EGM brought together representatives from UN-Habitat, government officials, leading academics, and private sector innovators to explore how artificial intelligence can drive urban transformation globally. The EGM examined innovative pathways to build more intelligent, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities through AI applications. It was highlighted that the forthcoming report will document China's comprehensive implementation of AI across urban contexts, creating a valuable roadmap for countries and cities worldwide pursuing AI-enabled urban sustainable development.

"AI offers unprecedented opportunities to revolutionize urban development approaches," stated by Mr. Bruno Dercon, Senior Human Settlements Officer at UN-Habitat's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, in his welcoming speech. "UN-Habitat remains committed to ensuring these technological advances create people-centered smart cities that directly support SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities." Lead expert Dr. Wang Jian from the Chinese Academy of Engineering delivered a keynote address identifying a fundamental shift in understanding urban resources. "Data has become one of cities' most important natural resources," Dr. Wang noted, emphasizing AI's critical role in leveraging this resource for sustainable urban advancement.
Participants also conducted field visits to Putuo District's Urban Operation Center, Government Service Center, 360 internet security corporation, and Taopu Smart City, witnessing cutting-edge digital urban innovation firsthand.
