Mr. Wang Xiqin, President of Tsinghua University,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear students,
It is a privilege to address to the students at Tsinghua University, an institution known for its brilliant young minds and dedication to excellence.
Founded in 1911, Tsinghua has a formidable alumni who have left an enduring impact across academic disciplines, public policy and the political sphere, as the alma mater of many of China’s senior leaders, including President Xi Jinping.
Today, I want to talk about our rapidly shifting world and how young people like yourselves can step up, lead and win the future.
We live in a time of rapid technological advancements, global interconnectedness, and complex societal issues.
Climate change, conflict, growing inequalities and geopolitical divisions are principal concerns of young people everywhere.
This world we all live in demands innovative solutions and visionary leaders who can navigate the challenges and shape a better future.
Indeed, as Mr. António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), said for this year’s International Youth Day, “Humanity depends on the boundless energy, ideas and contribution of youth everywhere.”
I recognize those joining us today as youth delegates from around the world.
Some of these delegates have even been recognized as Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, and I acknowledge them again today for their leadership and contribution to a more sustainable world.
However, as young individuals, all of you possess unique qualities that position you to take on a leadership role.
Firstly, young people are natural innovators.
Growing up in a digital age, you are the generation that has witnessed the birth and evolution of social media, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy.
You have the ability to harness the potential of these advancements and apply them to find creative solutions to global problems.
Embrace your innovative mindset and use it to drive change.
Secondly, young people are not burdened by preconceived notions or traditional structures and have a fresh, unbiased perspective.
This gives you the freedom to be fearless, question the status quo, propose new ideas, and challenge conventional wisdom.
Your unique perspective can foster unconventional thinking and pave the way for groundbreaking discoveries.
Furthermore, young people are known for their energy and enthusiasm.
You have the passion and drive to make a difference.
Use this energy to actively engage with your communities, organizations, and societies.
Whether it's through joining student clubs, volunteering, or leading grassroots initiatives, make your voice heard and contribute to change.
But leading the future requires more than just fresh thinking.
It also requires collaboration and empathy, to stand in solidarity with the most vulnerable and leave no one behind.
To tackle the complex challenges of our time, we need to work together across borders and disciplines.
Young people have the advantage of being globally connected and can leverage this connectivity to build networks, forge partnerships, and collaborate with diverse individuals and communities.
By fostering mutual understanding, we can tackle global issues together and have a greater impact.
Lastly, remember that leadership is not about titles or positions but about taking responsibility and making a difference wherever you are.
Leadership can be displayed in classrooms, workplaces, or even within your families.
Lead by example and inspire others through your dedication, integrity, and humility.
Friends.
In conclusion, today’s world is indeed a fast-changing and challenging place.
For our part, the UN will continue to support and stand with young people to help achieve the SDGs and shape a just and sustainable world.
You, as students of Tsinghua University, have limitless potential.
Do not underestimate the power of your ideas, ability, and actions in creating a better tomorrow.
