2026 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY EVENT

Ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to thank the UNEP China Office and our partners in China for bringing us together today to mark World Environment Day

Or（世界环境日）.

First held in 1973, World Environment Day has become the largest global platform for environmental outreach. 

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme, it raises awareness of critical environmental challenges — from climate change to chemical pollution.

And each year mobilizes hundreds of millions of people to protect our planet.

This year, the focus returns to the existential challenge of climate change.

It is a global call for climate action.

Across China, the United Nations system is proud to work alongside the government, partners and communities to support the country’s transition toward a greener, low-carbon future. 

From advancing renewable energy and biodiversity protection, to promoting sustainable cities and green finance, the UN in China is committed to supporting national priorities and contributing to global environmental goals, including the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

For decades, the world has heard the climate story—warnings, targets, distant deadlines. 

Too often, the response has been clouded by noise: delay, distraction, denial.

But listen closely and you can hear, beneath the noise, that another signal is rising.

Solar panels stretch across rooftops. 

Wind turbines line the horizon. 

Cities are being redesigned for people. 

Forests are being replanted. 

Positive tipping points are emerging in every corner of the planet. 

And in China, a forest of best practices is growing tall.

At today’s gathering, we are here to listen - to the music inspired by the Earth, to be inspired, to exchange and to share. 

And let us all actively step up #NowForClimate.
