Mr. Chang Yu, Chairperson of Beijing International Studies University,
Mr. Ji Jinbiao, President of Beijing International Studies University,
Excellencies,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am pleased to join you today in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Beijing International Studies University. I thank Chairman Yu and President Ji for the invitation.
Two years ago, I was present for the establishment of the BISU Institute for International and Regional Studies. It is a privilege to be back at BISU to celebrate another important milestone and a new chapter for this school.
Founded in 1964 with the support of China's late premier, Zhou Enlai, this university was one of China's first institutions to offer undergraduate education in foreign language studies.
Over the past six decades, Beijing International Studies University has played a vital role in fostering cross-cultural understanding and preparing students to navigate an increasingly interconnected world.
As China has embarked on its remarkable journey of reform and opening up, Beijing International Studies University has mirrored this progress, supporting talents who contribute to the nation’s development and its role on the global stage. The university's emphasis on language education and international studies has empowered generations of students to become leaders in diplomacy, business, and academia, including notable alumni such as Mr. Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
China's growing contributions on the world stage reflect the efforts of its universities and scholars who foster knowledge and cross-cultural communication between youth.
As the UN Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, said, “Education is about the future of young people. It is an investment that is crucial for building societies and allowing people to adapt swiftly to our changing world.” In today's complex global landscape, the importance of education that transcends borders cannot be overstated, and BISU demonstrates this investment by preparing students to address the pressing challenges we face.
The Summit of the Future took place last month in New York, where the international community came together to ensure the multilateral system is fit for purpose for the current and future challenges we face, and where Member States agreed upon a Pact for the Future. This Pact includes commitments to enhance education, promote sustainable practices, and foster global cooperation to empower young people.
Since its establishment, BISU has been forward-looking in preparing students not just for our current challenges but for those in the future as well. I am confident BISU will continue contributing to the promotion of international cooperation through initiatives such as student exchange programs and partnerships with educational institutions from around the world.
Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,
On this year's Youth Day, President Xi Jinping said, “Young people are the future of a nation and of the world. Working hard is the brightest color of youth, and taking actions is the best trial for young people.” I hope young scholars at BISU will strive for excellence in their studies, pursue their passions, and contribute to cross-cultural communication and international exchanges.
The UN in China is prepared to strengthen our collaboration with Beijing International Studies University to empower young people in realizing their potential and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. Through partnerships and experience sharing among students and universities, we can foster a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous future for everyone.
In closing, I again congratulate Beijing International Studies University on its 60th anniversary. May BISU continue to thrive as a beacon of knowledge and as a bridge for cross-cultural communication for many years to come.
Thank you.
