The Report on Beijing Future Science City Sustainable Development Practice Launched During 2025 World Cities Day Global Observance
the Report on Beijing Future Science City Sustainable Development Practice: Innovations and Achievements was officially launched.
Bogotá, Colombia – 1 November 2025 – The 2025 World Cities Day Global Observance was held in Bogotá, Colombia. During the event, the Report on Beijing Future Science City Sustainable Development Practice: Innovations and Achievements jointly developed by UN-Habitat, Beijing Future Science City, and Yudao Shifang, was officially launched.
As a case of China cities implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the report comprehensively reviews the sustainable development of Beijing Future Science City. It systematically presents achievements in seven key areas: sustainable top-level design and planning leadership, green infrastructure development, energy and resource management, smart city development, community engagement and social inclusion, ecological and cultural synergy, and the establishment of green transportation system. The report elaborates on the core concept of sustainable development featured by integrated model of "science + city".
In her speech, Wang Xiaoling, the Director of the Planning and Construction Department of the Beijing Future Science City Administrative Committee, emphasized that the practice of Beijing Future Science City fully demonstrates that how cities achieve synergistic progress between economic development and ecological protection by means of technology empowerment, ecological priority, and governance innovation. The Report provides a practical reference to the cities worldwide, especially those in developing countries. Those cases selected include the integrated energy application in the "Energy Valley", the technical breakthroughs in gene editing in the "Life Valley", and the experiences in participating in the development of the international standard collaborated with French team. The launch of this Report was a showcase of the sustainable development achievements of Beijing Future Science City on the international platform of UN-Habitat. It also represented an important initiative for Chinese cities to actively participate in global governance and share of experience of sustainable development. It marked that China’s urban sustainable development model has become a key reference for global urban transformation.
With the theme of "People-Centered Smart Cities", the World Cities Day Global Observance emphasized that digital technologies should serve the people and support the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda. Through high-level dialogues, roundtables, and seminars, the event deepened the public understanding of people-centered smart cities, promoted the application of innovation and digital technologies, facilitated the exchange of smart city practices and experiences among countries, and jointly contributed to the sustainable development of global cities.
